Paolo Gentiloni meets Bocconi Students. An EU economic policy for the next generation.
The European Union is exiting from the large economic shock induced by the COVID-19 pandemic, with GDP now back at the pre-crisis level. Such a quick reaction, compared to previous crises, has been possible thanks to the fact that monetary and fiscal policy have worked at the EU level in the same horizon. In particular, the coordinated emergency measures by the Member States and the setup of new programs at the EU level, such as the support to mitigate unemployment (SURE) and Next Generation EU, together with the extraordinary liquidity provided by the ECB, have allowed to protect jobs in the pandemic and to avoid a wave of bankruptcies.
The pandemic has however changed our economies, and thus requires an updated economic policy framework through which the European Union can tackle the necessary investments needed to deal with the two historic transition it faces: the digital revolution and climate change. Commissioner Gentiloni will address the students and debate with them on these important issues that will shape the future of the next generations of Europeans.
At the end of the lecture, the 3 team projects winners of the CIVICA Capstone Project Competition will be announced. The Projects are linked to specific and concrete EU-related policy challenges developed by students of the CIVICA alliance within the first edition of the Graduate Multicampus Course "The Future of Europe", jointly designed and taught across network. The projects will be awarded a monetary prize funded by Fondazione Achille e Giulia Boroli.
